Hello! My names is James. I recently graduated from the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA. While at the college, I majored in International Relations with a minor in Russian and Post Soviet Studies. For those of you who do not know what a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant (ETA) Scholar is, it is a merit-based grant administered by the Institute for International Education (IIE) and the U.S. Department of State for international cultural exchange through english education in local schools and through community engagement projects. The program is intended to increase mutual understanding between the United States and other countries through this inter-cultural exchange . For my 10 month grant, I will be placed in Ust-Kamenogorsk, Kazakhstan, a large city in Northeast Kazakhstan near the Russian, Mongolian, and Western Chinese border. While in Ust, I will teach classes at the American Cultural Center in the East Kazakhstan Oblast Pushkin Library and at Kazakh Secondary School Number 44. Outside of the classroom, I am not entirely sure what projects I will pursue, but I am looking into either conducting an anthropological research project or volunteering for a local NGO. I will figure this out and give updates on my blog about this side project once I have gotten my bearings in country. Hope you all enjoy my blog!
